Refugee Week and human flourishing

Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

Established in 1998 in the UK, Refugee Week takes place every year around World Refugee Day (20 June) and has since grown into a global movement.

Last year, CCSTP commissioned a series of short videos, drawing on Catholic Social Teaching, to address contemporary social and political issues in an accessible and engaging way.

As part of Refugee Week, we are highlighting one of those videos, from Dr Sophie Cartwright from Jesuit Refugee Service. She draws on a rich body of Catholic Social Teaching to explore a Catholic approach to refugees and migration.

In the video, Dr Cartwright reminds us: “Pope Francis calls on us to welcome, protect, and integrate refugees and migrants. Catholic Social Teaching tells us the goods of the earth are for everyone, this challenges us to rethink how we approach border management, thinking about it in terms of human need and human flourishing.”
